Helping households discover personalised ways to cut energy costs, increase comfort and reduce their carbon footprint.

The free Energy Choices Tool, developed by the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) and funded by National Grid Electricity Distribution and Northern Powergrid, provides independent advice on smart energy options tailored to individual circumstances.

From simple timer plugs to solar panels, the tool guides users through practical solutions based on their home, lifestyle and budget – with no sales pressure or specific brand recommendations.

“Whether someone wants to cut bills or cut carbon, there are options for them,” said Charlotte Johnson, director of Research and Analysis at CSE. “This tool provides a practical first step to help people understand what might work for their situation.”

How the Energy Choices Tool works

Users complete an online survey and receive personalised recommendations covering smart energy products, services and tariffs that could work for them. Each recommendation includes clear guidance on benefits, costs and what’s needed to get started.

The tool focuses on types of solution rather than specific brands, ensuring unbiased advice without commercial influence.

Smart energy options are products, services or tariffs that help households:

Supporting the energy advice sector

The Energy Choices Tool is designed to support not only households struggling with energy costs or looking to reduce their environmental impact, but also those working with them – such as energy advisors, local authorities and community organisations.

The tool has been co-created with consumers and energy experts, drawing on CSE’s 45 years of experience as an independent national energy advice charity and a trusted software provider of tools that support action on climate change.
