CSE is an independent national charity formed in 1979.
Our vision is a world where sustainability is second nature, carbon emissions have been cut to safe levels and fuel poverty has been replaced by energy justice.
We share our knowledge and practical experience to empower people to change the way they think and act about energy.
CSE supports people and organisations across the UK to tackle the climate emergency and end the suffering caused by cold homes.
Tackling the climate emergency
By bringing people together to transform the energy system and tackle the climate emergency, we build their understanding and commitment to change. We work with organisations of all sizes, from city councils to community groups. We help them shape net zero ambitions, set priorities and put plans into action.
Our analysis reveals new insights into transforming the energy system to become greener, smarter and fairer. We draw on our research and direct experience of people’s lives to make practical recommendations to local and national decision-makers. The tools and applications we build enable better decision-making.
We empower young voices through our support for young environmental leaders. We particularly encourage Black, brown and other minority ethnic groups to take part so that future decision-makers reflect the diversity of UK society.
We’re dedicated to a greener, smarter and fairer energy system where no one is left behind in this vital transition.
Ending the suffering caused by cold homes
We’ve been tackling the root causes of cold homes for over 40 years. Being able to afford to keep warm in winter is a basic right for everyone. It’s unacceptable that some people have to choose between heating their home and eating.
Every month, our advice service helps thousands of people to reduce their bills, access benefits and insulate their homes. Our energy advice changes lives, helps improve people’s mental and physical health and cuts carbon emissions.
Communities, local councils and energy companies partner with us to target and support people at risk of fuel poverty.
Our purpose, methods and values document (PDF <1MB) describes what we are trying to achieve as a charity, the changes we are seeking in society, and how we hope to bring this about.
