Smart & Fair 2024-2026 report

Smart & Fair 2024-2026: Outcomes and Insights
By the Centre for Sustainable Energy
July 2026

Our latest report brings together seven years of work examining who benefits from smart energy innovation, and importantly, who gets left behind. Through our Smart & Fair programme, the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) has developed tools, frameworks and evidence to shape how fairness is thought about in the energy market.

More people than ever are taking part in smart energy schemes and reaping benefits such as lower bills, greener energy and greater control. But this access depends on existing advantages, such as a household’s income, housing tenure, and the technology it owns and is able to use. Our work investigates what a fair transition looks like in practice and where intervention and structural reform are needed.
