Upgrading 1,000 social homes for Somerset council
Since March this year, we’ve been working in partnership with Somerset council, SCIS Group, and the ECO Grants team to upgrade social housing across the Somerset region.
We’ve already transformed over 500 cold, damp houses into comfortable and climate-friendly homes that are cheaper to keep warm. Installations included air-source heat pumps replacing outdated electric storage heaters, loft and cavity wall insulation, and smart energy monitoring systems.
We’ve also installed 1.4 MW of solar power – that’s over a solar farm’s worth of solar panels!
Independent, trusted project management
We’ve provided full project management from start to finish, liaising with installers and tenants to ensure every installation met the highest standards while delivering maximum energy savings for residents.
The majority of the work has been fully funded through ECO funding. Funding like this can significantly reduce upgrade costs for local authorities and registered social landlords.
For Somerset council, engaging CSE as a project partner helped everything run smoothly and ensured work was done to the highest quality, reducing the council’s workload significantly and freeing up their time and resource.
It’s been really beneficial for us as a council.

Supporting Somerset council’s tenants
The installations have already made a huge difference to residents – transforming their houses into warm homes that are cheaper to heat.
It was very cold, very damp. Now it’s just more comfortable, a lot cosier and warmer. I was following the smart meter, I just couldn’t believe it, it was a lot cheaper. It took a lot of worry off me.
Jacqueline Marett, tenant
But our support doesn’t stop there. As part of the project with Somerset council, we’ve worked with tenants to develop Smart Energy Action Plans (SMEAPs). These plans, fully funded by National Grid, help tenants make sense of their new technologies and ensure that they can get the most out of their upgraded homes.
These benefits will be felt by Somerset council too – when knowledgeable, confident tenants can use their systems correctly, this leads to reduced complaints, higher tenant satisfaction and reduced maintenance costs for years to come.
Building on over 45 years of expertise
We’ve got over 45 years of expertise in energy saving measures, and we’ve been working with councils and housing associations for over a decade. We work effectively with councils and installers to ensure that upgrades are of the highest quality and that both landlords and tenants benefit long after the installations are complete.
We believe that no one should suffer a cold home in winter. By working with councils and housing providers to upgrade their social housing, we’re making more homes healthier, warmer and fit for the future.
