Building capacity through training
Bespoke courses in sustainable energy
CSE offers bespoke courses in various aspects of sustainable energy, tailored to suit the needs of a range of audiences.
Our training is often provided as part of a package of services, including technical consultancy, advice and policy work, but can equally be offered as a ‘stand-alone’ option. The content, level and duration of the course is all up to the client. We will work with you to design a training programme that fits your needs and your budget.
Training for local authorities
We can deliver specific training support on a range of topics, including: low carbon planning policy; carbon management systems; energy and buildings; low carbon energy supply; supporting community-led sustainable energy projects; carbon costing/impact assessment; low carbon economic development; carbon reduction in schools; transport and smarter driving; and renewable energy technologies.
CSE’s acclaimed training courses and tools include our Local Carbon Management Matrix self-assessment tool for local authorities.
Clients for our bespoke training for local authorities include the councils of Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol City Council, Somerset, and Wealden.
Training for the planning community
With qualified planners, policy experts and technical specialists among our staff, we are well placed to work in this complex and, sometimes, contentious area. We can provide training on: national policy and legislation; developing evidence-based policies; assessing resources and constraints; micro-renewable energy technologies; advanced planning for wind power; biomass; low carbon buildings and heritage; and engaging communities in low carbon planning.
Clients and funders of our training for planners include the Planning Inspectorate, the departments of Energy and Climate Change and Communities and Local Government and the councils of Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol City, Wiltshire and Wealden.
Our training for the workplace has enabled a wide range of clients (the University of Bath, Bath & North East Somerset PCT, Cleveland Fire Brigade, Avon and Somerset Constabulary, Curo, to name just some) to involve their employees in saving energy at work.
Our most popular workplace training is for Energy Champions – equipping staff volunteers with the knowledge and confidence to influence the culture of energy use in their workplace by helping their colleagues to adopt good energy habits.

Training for energy advice providers
As pioneers of the first energy advice phoneline in the early 1990s, CSE developed training and support to the Energy Saving Trust advice centres, including creating the Renewable Energy Handbook, a 200-page detailed technical resource. We continue to provide training for energy advice providers enabling them to give useful, accurate advice to householders on energy efficiency and renewable energy.
CSE is a training provider for the NEA City & Guilds in Energy Awareness, a three-day accredited course. For dates and availability and to book, individuals and organisations should contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Training for community groups
We have extensive experience training community members to carry out energy projects and low carbon planning, including community led renewable energy schemes, energy efficiency projects, fuel poverty and behaviour change initiatives.
Our training covers both the practicalities of setting up and managing community energy initiatives, as well as ‘how to’ sessions on the delivery of short and long term projects in your community. See here for more information on courses and resources for groups who want to run their own training.
Training for housing associations and tenants
Our training enables housing association staff to: identify tenants living in cold, damp homes or struggling with fuel debt; to provide appropriate energy advice to tenants; and to take action to address heating system issues or energy problems in the building fabric. CSE also provides Energy Champion training to housing association staff who want to reduce their own energy use at work.
Training for the energy industry
Our training for private and public sector organisations in the energy sectors helps them provide better advice to their customers on renewable energy options and connection issues. Clients have included: Western Power Distribution, npower, Ofgem, and the Department of Energy and Climate Change
