Today's announcement that the average household's energy bill will rise by £693 a year is chilling news for millions of people already struggling to heat their homes.

The increases are eye-watering. Bills for the average customer on a default tariff will rise from £1,277 to just under £2,000. Prepayment customers will see an increase of £708.
