Big thanks to our volunteers
1 June 2017
1-7 June is National Volunteers' Week and a chance for us to highlight the fantastic work done by our volunteers. The impact that volunteers have is enormous – they help us to extend the support that our Home Energy Team offers and work to spread our network in the places where we operate.
We asked Jenny, one of our veteran volunteers about her experiences. Jenny started volunteering with us five years ago now and helps us out three times a week. She works on various different advice projects carrying out home visits along with CSE staff.
Jenny explained one of the problems that she (and CSE) help to solve:
“There’s so many things to keep on top of now. It’s very hard, especially for older people to keep up with the changes that have taken place. Before, your energy was just supplied by your regional supplier and you didn’t need to think about switching. Now, you have to be really proactive and that can be confusing and stressful. So I always try to help people to understand the basics so that they can make an informed choice.”
Jenny thinks of her volunteering as a “second career” and puts the skills she learned as a nurse to good use, helping to give empathetic support. We feel very lucky to have her (and the rest of our wonderful volunteers) on board! Lisa Evans, part of the Home Energy Team who has worked closely with Jenny said:
“Jenny’s input and dedication is invaluable and we wouldn’t have the capacity to do all that we do without her. Her calm, confident approach helps to put everyone at ease. Her energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the cause is infectious, spurring us all on! Jenny, simply, is an absolute star.”
If you are interested in volunteering with us, please find some more information here. We’re a friendly bunch and are very grateful for the work that our volunteers do. You don't need to have any previous knowledge about energy - just an enthusiasm for helping people.
