Energy advice training for our volunteers
How we equip our excellent helpers to give advice locally

It's Volunteers' Week, and we are very aware of the huge difference that our 35+ volunteers make. Thanks to them, we are able to offer energy advice, help and support to householders all across Bristol and Somerset.
Last week, Sonia from our Home Energy Team ran a workshop for some of our volunteers, training them on several aspects of running a local energy advice surgery. They learnt about energy suppliers, benefits, tenancy issues, referring people to other relevant agencies, and the CSE projects and schemes that might be able to help them.
The knowledge gained at this workshop will also be useful preparation for doing home visits or giving advice on the Home Energy Team stand at a public event. These volunteers will now follow up the workshop by helping our Energy Advisors at a real advice surgery, where they can put their knowledge into practice.
"The volunteers who attended were great," said Sonia. "They asked lots of questions and there was lots of discussion throughout. At the end of the session, all of these volunteers had signed up to attend an advice event in the upcoming month."
We already have a number of volunteers who confidently run drop-in advice surgeries, support our freephone advice line, assist on home visits for vulnerable customers and offer their time to help in administration in the office, allowing us to reach so many more people who are in need of help and advice.
