Community Energy Champions
Training up local advisors for Devon
16 December 2013
Earlier this month, CSE’s Lead Trainer, Anna Watts, trained 25 community energy champions from several communities across the South Hams and West Devon area. The aim was to provide basic training in energy efficiency so that they could then offer advice within their local communities – through talks to community groups, drop-in advice sessions, on a stall at a local event, etc.
The training took place over two days and included topics such as:
- The key benefits for saving energy
- Recognising signs of fuel poverty
- Low and no-cost measures that any householder can take to reduce their fuel use
- How to control central heating and night storage heaters
- Insulation and draught proofing options for different types of properties and circumstances
- How to tackle condensation
- Interpreting energy bills, reading meters and changing fuel provider
The community energy champions were all part of the South West Devon Community Energy Partnership, including groups such as Greener Teign, PL21 and local Transition groups.
Their training took place at Teignbridge District Council’s Old Forde House in Newton Abbot - a stunning grade I listed building dating back to the 1600s. It was funded by the EU’s Interreg programme (managed by Devon County Council).
As well as the planned topics, there was some interesting discussion and debate about what the group could do next – where they should concentrate their efforts, and which other individuals and organisations they could usefully make links with.
The training was very well-received. The community energy champions said:
"Really informative, and a good mix of participation across the group. Even chatting at the free times was informative."
"Comprehensive information, well delivered. Good pace, clear handouts and FUN!"
"It was practical and deliverable and we could learn from each other."
