The Community Energy Strategy - our response to the Call for Evidence
Read our recommendations to the Government
31 July 2013
The Department of Energy and Climate Change is due to publish a Community Energy Strategy in the autumn. This is an important time for the future development of community energy projects, a key part of CSE's work. We believe that local communities have an essential role to play in developing a low carbon, sustainable energy future for the UK.
The Government put out a Call for Evidence as part of the Strategy's development. Based on all our experience supporting communities and our expertise in the field of community energy, CSE has submitted a detailed response.

Our main recommendations are:
- Community energy needs to be defined more widely, beyond the parameters that DECC is currently using.
- Community energy planning should be a mandatory part of Local Plans and Neighbourhood Plans.
- Support for intermediary organisations is vital; many community projects would not get off the ground without their support.
- Government needs to ensure that all communities, regardless of social capital and local expertise, can be supported to fully develop their potential for energy saving and energy generation.
