Want to start a community energy project?

Training dates in Bristol and Somerset announced

27 June 2011

CSE has launched a new series of free training events aimed at equipping community groups across Somerset and the former Avon area with the information and knowledge to launch their own energy project.

Bridget Newbery is CSE's Community Projects Manager. "The content of this series of events is shaped by what community groups have told us they need. Top of the list were issues surrounding financing, particularly in relation to the feed-in tariff and renewable heat incentive, closely followed by concerns around planning and permitted development. We'll make sure that the training programme, which will run throughout the year, will reflect these priorities and others that community groups are keen to learn more about."

Scheduled courses:

Energy basics: for individual volunteers | Wed 3 Aug (either 14.00 to 16.30 or 18.00 to 20.30) at CSE's offices in Bedminster, Bristol and Sat 6 Aug (10.00 to 12.30) | St Pauls Learning & Family Centre, Bristol
This course will provide participants with an overview of energy efficiency measures for the home so that they can pass useful advice onto householders in their local community. For more details and to book, contact kirsty.mitchell@cse.org.uk.

Solar photovoltaics: Talks and tour of a community scale system | Sat 6 Aug (14.30 to 16.30pm) | Tobacco Factory, Bristol
Talks on survey and installation processes, solar PV suitability and considerations, client experience of installing and using PV and feed-in tariff , Q&A or advice stands to follow.

There may come a point in your project where you need to become a constituted group – for example to be able to procure services, obtain funding or be transparent about your aims and objectives. The following two sessions will explain different legal structures and help you decide which is most appropriate for your group.

Legal structures for community groups | Tue 13 Sept (18.30 to 20.30) | The Coach House, Upper York Street, Bristol

Guest speaker from the Bristol Co-operative Development Agency.

You can download an invitation with more details of this event, here.

Legal structures for community groups | Thu 29 Sept (19.00 to 21.00) | The Crispin Community Centre, Leigh Road, Street
Guest speaker from the Somerset Co-operative Services.

Courses which have already run:

Starting your own community energy scheme | Wed 29 June | Knowle West Media Centre, Bristol
Featured a talk from Dan McCallum of Awel Aman Tawe focusing on small wind and community solar, and was aimed at people seeking to start their own community energy schemes.

Consulting and engaging with your community | Mon 18 July (13.30 to 16.30) | The Old Deanery, Wells, Somerset (refreshments provided)
Engaging local people and getting them on board with your ideas can be crucial to a project’s success. This session explored why, when and how to carry out a formal consultation event with your community (download further details here).

The consultation is still open, so if you want to add your thoughts on suitable subjects for CSE’s training and workshops, visit www.surveymonkey.com/s/cse_training.
