Training in low-carbon community-led planning

Dates announced in Ipswich, Kendal, Truro and Maidstone

13 June 2011

CSE is running ten workshops to explore how communities can plan low-carbon and renewable energy initiatives, such as wind farms or solar projects.

The workshops are aimed at community groups themselves, as well as the staff of organisations like local authorities, national parks and third sector organisations who work with communities on local planning or sustainable living initiatives.

The training will introduce delegates to the PlanLoCaL suite of tools which support communities in shaping their own low-carbon future and a more strategic engagement with the planning system. There will also be sessions from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, on the government’s Community Energy Online portal, and from the UK Climate Impacts Programme, on how communities can plan adaptation techniques to help deal with the already unavoidable effects of climate change.

There is no charge for the training which is funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government. All delegates will receive copies of the PlanLoCaL DVDs and resource pack to take away with them.

The venues and dates of the first four are: Ipswich (Thurs, 7 July 2011), Kendal (Thurs, 28 July 2011), Truro (Thurs, 8 Sept 2011) and Maidstone (Thurs, 6 Oct 2011).

You can download more information here, and a booking form here.

We'll post the dates and venues of the other six events when they are known. Sign up to our enews to be kept in the loop.

A similar event in Bath in February this year was warmly received by the many delegates from central and local government, community groups and energy agencies who attended. It was run by CSE's Rachel Coxcoon who said: "These are good times for communities looking to develop their own renewable energy generation and to create an income stream for reinvesting in local assets. The Localism Bill, the feed-in tariff and the renewable heat incentive have combined to produce a fertile environment for community led planning approaches to low-carbon development."

Update: Venues for the second (Kendal), third (Truro) and fourth (Maidstone) events have now been confirmed. They will be held at:

  • Kendal Town Hall, Highgate, LA9 4DL (Thurs, 28 July 2011)
  • Truro Town Hall, Municipal Buildings, Boscawen Street, TR1 2NE (Thurs, 8 Sept2011)
  • County Hall, Floor 2, Invicta House, Maidstone, ME14 1XX (Thurs, 6 Oct 2011)
