Introducing Solar Wizard

Solar panels on the roof of a house. It's winter, but the sky is bright so the panels will still be generating useful amounts of electricity.

Are you curious about the solar potential of your home or building? Solar Wizard, our innovative online tool launches today!

Designed by the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) to encourage more people across the UK to install solar panels, Solar Wizard offers a quick, straightforward, and unbiased way to evaluate if installing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on your home or building is suitable.

Solar Wizard gives you a quick and easy summary of how much energy solar panels on your roof could generate, how much it could cost to get them installed and how quickly you could earn this back through savings on your energy bills. It’s a free-to-use, completely impartial tool that assesses a roof’s potential (both domestic and non-domestic) for solar, with additional information on next steps if you’re interested in installing panels.

How do you know if rooftop solar is right for you?

In this video, Jack explains the key factors that affect whether a building is suitable for solar PV and shares how you can find all the information you need with Solar Wizard.

Explore solar potential like never before

Solar Wizard is a user-friendly tool designed for everyone, from homeowners and community groups to local authorities and anyone interested in making informed decisions about investing in solar PV technology for their home or building.

Solar Wizard has two user experience interfaces:

Homeowners (public facing)

With Solar Wizard, you can quickly look up any building in England, Wales, and Scotland, based on its postcode. The tool provides a summary report and you can even customise costs and energy usage to get a more tailored estimate for your specific building.

Building selection and economic modelling

Visualise solar potential with interactive maps. We know parish and town councils, alongside larger district, unitary and county authorities, want to understand the viability of PV for their own buildings and the contribution rooftop solar could make to their climate emergency responses.

Solar Wizard also offers an interactive map interface that displays solar potential across larger areas. This map interface is a paid service offering additional functionality for users to select multiple buildings and run financial modelling. A summary of the data will show the best buildings in the area for solar and the data can be downloaded. You can also run financial modelling looking at potential investment, payback periods, rate of returns and more.  Find out more about this service and our methodology here.

Launch of Solar Wizard

Transforming how we generate and use energy is crucial for tackling the climate emergency and transitioning to a local, low-carbon energy system. With less than 5% of UK homes currently equipped with solar panels, there’s huge opportunity to expand this commercially viable low-carbon technology.

At CSE, we’re dedicated to addressing the climate emergency and supporting those struggling with their energy needs. Solar Wizard is our latest contribution to supporting more people to take their first step towards exploring low-carbon technologies.
