Income from renewable energy
You can earn money by generating your own energy at home.
Two Government schemes will pay you a rate based on how much energy they expect you to generate.
- The feed-in tariff pays you for electricity that you generate from solar PV panels, small wind turbines, or small hydro-electric generators. Essentially, the Government pays you for generating electricity, and you also sell the electricity that you generate but don’t use in your home back to the grid, for a set price. Read all about it here.
- The Renewable Heat Incentive pays you for generating heat – whether to heat up your water or your home – from a renewable source. This includes solar thermal (for heating water), biomass boilers that run your central heating, ground-source heat pumps and air-to-water heat pumps. Read all about it here.
Both of these schemes can help you to pay back some of the initial cost of installing these renewable technologies.
