Janine Michael
Head of Development & Communications

Janine has been Head of Development at the Centre for Sustainable Energy since May 2000 and oversees all new project development and fundraising within the charity, from conception of a project idea to practical delivery.

Since joining CSE she has helped to diversify the range of funding sources for CSE's work which now span government departments, the energy industry, local government, charitable grants, lottery programmes and consultancy contracts. She has also worked on a range of CSE projects including the early development of the Green Communities network, guidance for local authorities on implementing carbon reduction activity and authored guidance on accessing different funding sources to implement energy projects.

Janine has been involved in energy efficiency and sustainable energy issues since the early 1990s. Prior to joining CSE, she worked for a range of sustainable energy organisations, including an energy consultancy, the Building Research Establishment and the former Energy Efficiency Office of the Department of the Environment. She has been responsible for producing best practice guidance for new and refurbished housing, helped design national energy efficiency grant schemes and advised on public awareness campaigns. She has also worked with local authorities, energy rating companies, house builders and building societies to help deliver higher energy efficiency standards in new and existing housing.

Janine has an MSc in Energy Conservation and the Environment, and a BSc in Maths.

Dr Nick Banks
Senior Development Manager

Nick joined CSE in September 2010 and has over 15 years experience working and studying in the environmental field. At CSE, Nick helps to develop our work with local authorities and housing associations, as well as exploring European funding opportunities.

Nick specialises in behavioural and attitudinal research but has also delivered energy and environmental audits, carbon foot printing of organisations, life cycle assessments, implementation of environmental management systems (ISO 14001), energy modelling and mapping projects, statistical analysis and general strategy and policy work.

His work experience includes domestic energy policy research with Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute, installation of photovoltaic lighting systems in rural Nepal with a small NGO based in Kathmandu, community energy work with Carbon Descent,  an energy agency based in central London, and energy and environmental consultancy for Sustain, where Nick led the policy and strategy function within the organisation.

Nick has a first degree in Human Sciences from Sussex University (BSc), an MSc in Energy Conservation and the Environment from Cranfield University, a post graduate diploma in Science Communication from Birkbeck College (pg.Dip) and completed his PhD in the Sociology of Energy Use with Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute in 1998.

Ruth Cole
Senior Development Manager

Ruth joined CSE in August 2010, and works on the development of new projects, tendering and grant fundraising.

She has five years of experience working within the environmental and voluntary sector. Her wider interest in sustainability has led to a variety of voluntary activities within the field, including a year as an Environment Officer for the Union of University of East Anglia Students. Prior to joining CSE, Ruth spent two years as a grant fundraiser for Global Action Plan, and has also worked in grant fundraising for Avon Wildlife Trust and in programme support for South East Wales Energy Agency. At Global Action Plan, she also designed and ran workshops to assist social welfare charities in exploring how climate change may affect their work.

Ruth has a BSc (1st) in Environmental Sciences focusing on climate science, energy and environmental economics.

Matthew Rees
Communications & Publicity Officer

Matthew joined CSE in 2008 as Communications and Publicity Officer, and is responsible for helping to promote the organisation's work, and to spread the message about energy efficiency and sustainable energy. He's responsible for a number of communication tools including the CSE website and enews, news releases, publications and leaflets, and numerous other activities across all aspects of CSE's work.

He has a number of years' experience working in similar roles, including at South Gloucestershire Council (2002-07) and for Capita (2007) as Communications Officer. He spent several years working in the local media industry, and has also volunteered in media and communications roles in the local arts sector, too.

Matthew has a BA (Hons) in Time-based Media and a PGCe in Screenwriting both from the University of the West of England in Bristol.

Jonathan Twomey
Senior Development Manager

Jonathan joined CSE in March 2008 and works on new project development and fundraising within the organisation.

He has ten years experience of project management and fundraising, particularly in the conservation/environmental sector. Prior to joining CSE, Jonathan was a fundraising manager at the Soil Association, working on a range of sustainable food and farming projects, and was most recently at Bristol Zoo.

Jonathan also has a BA in History from the University of Liverpool.

Tim Weisselberg
Communications & Publicity Manager

Tim is responsible for CSE's corporate communications and publicity, and for the communications element of the organisation's larger projects such as the 100 Ideas House and Our Big Energy Challenge. He was marketing manager for the South West Energy Saving Trust advice centre from its launch in August 2008 to February 2009. He has also worked on the relaunch of the CSE website, and on products and events marking CSE's 30th anniversary in 2009.

Tim has almost two decades' worth of experience in print and communications. He was Publications Manager at the Soil Association (1994-2000) before moving to Greenpeace International in Amsterdam (2001-2003) where he began as Publications Manager before becoming Head of Images, covering print, video and still-photography. He has experience in writing, design, print production, brand-management and image use.

Tim has a BA (Hons) in History and Politics and a MSc from Bristol University in International Politics.
