Powering up the Somerset levels and moors

Supporting community-based renewable energy schemes

1 September 2010

Community groups in central Somerset are set to benefit from a new CSE project that will help them identify and implement sound opportunities for income-generating renewable energy schemes.

The aim is to support 10 to 15 communities in the area of Somerset known locally as the ‘Levels and Moors’ to the point where they are either actually generating their own renewable energy or have a project ready to go that is both technically and financially sound.

“It’s a really exciting prospect,” said Bridget Newbery, a Community Project Manager at CSE. “We are already aware of lots of groups who want to investigate renewable energy – especially now that the recently introduced feed-in tariffs offer the chance of earning cash for their community – and some of them have plans that are quite well-advanced.”

The schemes could include anything from: biomass, solar water heating, solar photovoltaic, ground or air source heat pumps and wind.

The initiative is being funded over two years by South West Regional Development Agency via Local Action for Rural Communities.
