CSE looks to provide a socially just response to climate change
30 November 2009
A new CSE project aimed at providing the analysis and information necessary to underpin socially just responses to climate change in the UK, has got underway after it recently received funding from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
Working with the Universities of Bristol and Oxford, CSE has developed a methodology to establish a representative household dataset that is capable of supporting analysis of distributional impacts of climate change policies across English households. Unlike previous work by CSE and others in this area, this project will provide a detailed picture of the opportunities to cut carbon emissions across different households in the UK and the associated costs and benefits.
The research will identify the probable ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ from a range of policy scenarios, providing socioeconomic, demographic and geographic characteristics defining each group. The team will then assess the impacts on specific groups of interest, such as those at risk of fuel poverty and those with limited carbon reduction opportunities.
Joshua Thumim, who will lead the research for CSE, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded funding by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and look forward to developing this vital piece of work with our partners at the Universities of Oxford and Bristol.”
