Empowering communities to plan their low carbon future

CLG award CSE £500,000 for new three year programme

8 May 2009

Helping communities understand how their locality can best contribute to a low carbon future and enabling them to shape local planning policies accordingly are the core objectives of a new programme being developed by the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE).

This follows an announcement by the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) that it was awarding the charity a grant of £500,000 over three years from its Third Sector Empowerment Fund.

CSE’s Chief Executive, Simon Roberts, said: “There’s often a huge disconnect between the challenge of tackling climate change at local level, the interests of local communities, and the formal processes of developing local planning policy. We’re aiming to tackle this head on across England with this new programme which endeavours to tie these different elements together.

“We’re delighted that this grant means we can build on our pioneering work on low carbon planning with local planning officials and councillors and on our 30 years’ of experience working with communities on energy issues.”

Full details of the programme are being finalised and will be announced shortly.
